How to check who owns a domain name or website

To know who owns a domain name or website all you need to do is head over to domain whois information sites like whois.sc (domaintools.com), who.is, whois-search.com, DNSstuff.com and enter the domain name in the whois domain search field and press ok. Then they will show you the information of the domain owner, when that domain was registered, and the name servers the domain name (website) use with which you can, most of the time, understand on which web host that domain is hosted. Some sites like DomainTools.com even offer more information like if that domain name is listed for sale on any of those domain buying and selling sites like Sedo, Godaddy auctions, acquirethisname etc. Also, Most of these domain whois  information sites offer free and paid services like the whole registrant history of the domain name, reverse ip, and domain suggestion tools etc.

And you can’t know the domain ownership of every domain in this way. Because most of the time all the generic TLD domain registrars offer some domain ownership hiding service like WhoisGuard (namechep), Whois privacy (Name), Private Registration etc. And if the owner of a particular domain name, which you want to know who the registrant is, hides his address from public access by making use of whois guard kind of services, then there is nothing much you can do about it. You can’t know the ownership of the domain name in this case easily. Unless it is a matter of very high important which involves law suits for trademark infringement, copyright acts, spam, hacking and other disputes, you can’t get the owner information of that particular domain regularly  as you can do with other domain names. But if you have a great reason to know the ownership of the domain then you can contact the original registrar (the company which registered the domain name on behalf of the actual owner) and inquire about it. And then you can get the registrant information through a court order. And remember the whois privacy is not allowed for most of those CCtlds (country code top-level domain names) the ownership information (either company or individual) of which should be available publicly with just a whois search.
